I was born in New York City in 1953, the third child of Italian immigrant parents. I attended parochial schools in the Bronx and from an early age I expressed an interest in science and medicine. I attended Boston University and planned to pursue pre-medical studies. While there, I was very much influenced by my faculty adviser, a member of the philosophy department and I began to develop an interest in philosophy. The next year I transferred to SUNY Stony Brook and continued my pre-medical studies. However, I became increasingly frustrated by the superficial nature of this curriculum, which seem to be about nothing more than acquiring credits. Frustrated and disappointed, I decided to turn to what I was truly interested in – learning. I double majored in psychology and philosophy. I was particularly interested in phenomenology and the philosophy of science. This led me to pursue a master’s degree in Phenomenological Psychology at Duquesne University. While at Duquesne, I began to practice yoga and I came across a little book entitled, Homeopathic Medicine, by Harris Coulter. That book literally changed my life. In homeopathy I saw the synthesis of medicine and phenomenology – a system of healing based mostly on a person’s unique experience of their illness as lived and expressed by the patient himself not as defined by conventional medicine. Then and there I decided to apply to medical school. I completed my master’s degree in 1977 and returned to New York to acquire the necessary pre-medical requirements. While studying pre-med at Hunter College, my study partner introduced me to another holistic healing system – osteopathy. I applied to both allopathic (MD) programs and osteopathic (DO) programs. I was accepted at The New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1981, was graduated in 1985 and completed my internship at Kennedy Memorial Hospital, Saddlebrook, New Jersey, in 1986. During 1986-1987 I took a much-needed year off and spent some of that time living at a yoga institute. I opened my practice in 1987 in Forest Hills, Queens and later moved my practice to Manhattan in 1992. I am board certified in Family Practice (C-FP), Osteopathic Manipulation (C-SPOMM) and Homeopathy (D.Ht.). Over the years, I have come to realize that I practice a kind of medicine that didn’t really have a name. It is an integration of all that I have learned over the years. In 2001, I came across the works of the philosopher Ken Wilber and realized that what I have been developing over the years could, in his words, be called Integral Medicine. I live in Ridgefield, Connecticut with my wife, son and a soft-coated wheaten terrier named Sandy.
